Tame but sensible
I have just bought a 1992 200Tdi D1 for a little enhancing and playing in the woods.
How far can I go with a suspension lift and tyres?
I want to fit 245/75R16 BFG KM2s but would need a slight 30-35mm lift to fit them in, will it be within testing limits or will I get a big fat fail and kicked out?
And what for the fitting of a steering gaurd and diff gaurds? Allowed or not?
Snorkels?
Sorry but the system here is very, very new to me and I don't want to waste time and money doing it only to have to undo it for the anual test!!!
Any advice greatly recieved.
Nigel.

Re: Tame but sensible
Belgian MOT on springs (at least for a 130): they know the thickness in mm of the steel but not the height of the spring
So if you have a 1" lift using the same diameters they can say 'nothing'

Re: Tame but sensible
As far as I know:
- snorkel, steering guard, diff guard, tree sliders and other protection: no problem
- the lift probably won't be noticed IF the springs are black. Another colour and they will probably measure the springs... But I always thought the diameter, thickness and the number of wraps were included in the PVG... The last two will probably be different for the non-stock springs.
- The diameter of the tires:
* If you have 5 or more seats: no more than 1.5% taller than the original size.
So if the stock size is 235/70 R16 (don't know for the D1), then the KM2's are 5.2% taller -> not allowed
* If the car has only 2 seats and a 20 cm 'wall' behind the front seats (light truck): in the law nothing is mentioned about limitations, but you'll need your share of luck.... (every year of course)
- The speed index of the MT tires might also be a problem for a Discovery. Normally it should be the same or higher than standard, but if you can prove (owners manual????) that the index is higher than your top speed, you might get away with it..
The only exception I know: If your car is registerd as a passenger car (5 or more seats), 'slower tires' are allowed between 1 october and 30 april if you have sticker on your screen which indicates the max speed of your new tires.
.... Not that I check every windscreen, but I've never seen such a sticker on a car...
The easiest thing to do is to keep the original tyres for the MOT test and choose black longer springs. A lift of 50 mm or less is not that easily noticed.

Re: Tame but sensible
The new car is lichte vrachtwagen, commercial to me, and the tyres would be 5.4% bigger than the current ones, but it would probably just be my luck to have a picky tester on the day!!!
Bizarrely the car has a set of aftermarket 15"ally wheels fitted with Grabber A/T2s on the front almost new and worn out rears, we are going to get another 2 new of the same(see below) which they accept, and another of similar size to go on the 16" steel rim as a spare, but I would prefer to just get the BFG KM2s on my 16" deep dish alloys but rather spend a few more euro to guarantee a pass than not enough and fail!!
General GRABBER AT2 235/75 R15 109S XL OWL : 4 / 5 - 74 Ratings
I have been pre-warned of the "black spring" policy, will just make sure springs supplied are black
I will type this as clearly and precisely as I can but what have they found fault with here? Google translate only helps so much
F02: Motorkap / Dak : Krassen/lakschade
I really can't decipher it? Even looking at the car and having an idea of what they are pointing out, the car is not visibly damaged at all!!

Re: Tame but sensible
For a light Truck/lichte vrachtwagen they only check if the loadindex and speedindex are ok. They do NOT check the size of the tires
What you need with a 'lichte vrachtwagen' is mudflaps, without you get a red card
The message: some damage in the paint on the bonnet and/or roof so nothing to worry about

Re: Tame but sensible
I don't think it would be a problem if you leave your spare tire at home. They don't check whether your car is equiped with a spare or repar kit.
Edit: mudflaps are only necessary behind the rear tyres. At least I got a green card with only the rears fitted...

Re: Tame but sensible
Forgot to mention it in my first post, but A-bars are not allowed unless they are CE-approved or where fitted before 2006.

Re: Tame but sensible
It has an old croc of a thing strapped to the front end but it will most likely go and be replaced by a H/D winching bumper, probably looking to fabricate the rear bumper myself to try and reduce the whopping overhang!!Alvin schreef:Forgot to mention it in my first post, but A-bars are not allowed unless they are CE-approved or where fitted before 2006.
I have got to replace the inner mud plate and flap holder on this one anyway but thanks for the heads up

Is this acceptable to repair my sills?

I hope the link is good, I am cautious of doing things that I would normally do back in England, I am yet to see exactly how bad they are but if they are suspect then out they come and if it is acceptable then in goes the box section to beef up the sills.
